Disease / pest Damage stage Management / Chemical Organic

Adult Weevil:

  • Small, ant-like, 6-8 mm long. Head is bluish brown, thorax & legs brownish red and antenna bright red in colour.
  • Grub : small, legless & pale yellow in colour with a brown head.

Nature Of Damage:

  • Grubs bore into the stems in the field and make tunnels feeding on the soft pith. Grubs as well as adults bore into the tubers both in the fields and in godowns. Infested tubers show dark patches and ultimetly rot. Such tubers lose taste and become unfit for consumption. Considerable damage (upto 70%) is caused by the pest.

Management:

  • Healthy cuttings should be selected for planting.
  • Perodical hoeing closes the cracks in fields & minimizes the damage.
  • Use of pheromone traps has been found successful in minimizing the damage.
  • After harvest of the crop vines should be collected & destroyed.
  • Follow proper crop rotation.
  • Spray with 0.1 % carbaryl.
  • Apply phorate 10 G in the soil at planting @ 10 kg/ha.

Disease / pest Damage stage Management / Chemical Organic

Damage Crops:

  • Sweet potato, mug, udid & til.

Management:

  • Hand picking & destruction of caterpillar in early stage of infestation.
  • Ploughing the field after harvest will expose the pupae.
  • Dusting the crop with 10% carbaryl dust @ 20 kg/ha.
